Shyamnagar Upazila is the most southwestern upazila of Bangladesh. It is the largest upazila of Bangladesh. In the southern part of this upazila is the world's largest tidal mangrove forest or Sundarbans. According to the notification dated 17th January 2023 of Local Government Department of Local Government Rural Development and Cooperatives Ministry of Local Government-2 Branch regarding 20 mauzas of 03 Sadar Union Parishad, 11 mauzas of 01 Bhurulia Union Parishad and 1 mauza of 08 Ishwaripur Union of this upazila ‍ this Municipality is formed. The then Upazila Executive Officer Mr. Akter Hossain was appointed as the first administrator of the municipality.
As a result of the formation of this municipality by the rivers Chuna and Yamuna, the civic benefits of the people of this region will increase and the tourism industry of the Sundarbans region will be opened up.
